Canada ↔ Thailand arts and education exchange connecting British Columbia and Northern Thailand through teaching, creative workshops, and cultural learning.
Sanook (สนุก) is a Thai word meaning finding joy and purpose in what you do. It reflects the spirit of Thai culture — creativity, hospitality, art, and enthusiasm.
Canuck represents the Canadian side of the exchange — community-minded, creative, and open to new ideas.
Together the name reflects the goal of the project: bringing people together through learning, culture, and shared creative experiences.
The project builds partnerships between educators, artists, and communities with a focus on ceramics, cultural exchange, and creative education — bringing practical international experience to both sides of the Pacific.
In 2025 the project team spent time in Chiang Mai attending education fairs, visiting studios, meeting with university students and faculty, and signing a memorandum of collaboration with Chiang Mai University.
In Powell River / qathet the project is developing programming with local schools, educators, and community partners. The program does not bring young students from Thailand to Powell River / qathet — only university-level educators and professionals seeking practical experience.
At Chiang Mai education fairs, Sanook Canuck maintains a presence as an intermediary for participating schools, helping families and institutions learn about the qathet region and explore whether existing or new programs are a fit for them.
Northern Thailand is one of Southeast Asia's most vibrant cultural regions, known for its universities, craft traditions, and artistic communities.
Sanook Canuck works with educators and students connected to Chiang Mai University and the wider arts and education community.
Visits to the region have included gallery nights, education fairs, and meetings with students interested in participating in exchange opportunities.
The current focus is training CMU university students in basic French so they can come to Canada for short-term teaching placements. We have seen strong interest from Thai students in First Nations culture and Canada's recycling and environmental programs.
Powell River / qathet provides visiting educators with a unique coastal learning environment combining forests, ocean, arts culture, and strong community programs.
Rather than operating from a single location, the program brings activities directly into communities — Sliammon, Wildwood, Westview, and surrounding areas — through partnerships with schools, community centres, and local organizations.
Visiting educators connect with environmental programs, recycling initiatives, coastal and Indigenous cultures, and creative workshops across the qathet region.
Hands-on workshops connecting craft traditions in Thailand and British Columbia.
Thai student teachers gain international classroom experience while sharing culture with Canadian students.
Food, language, martial arts, markets, and everyday traditions create meaningful connections.
Extracurricular activities delivered directly into communities including Wildwood, Westview, and Sliammon.
The exchange creates practical benefits on both sides — for students in qathet, for Thai educators building their careers, and for local teachers looking for international professional development.
Exposure to Thai kickboxing, entrepreneurship ideas, fundraising, charity work, and cultural adventures — delivered as extracurricular programming by visiting Thai educators. New experiences that bring the world into local communities.
Young university-trained teachers and artists gain practical overseas experience, learn about Canadian programs like recycling and environmental education, connect with First Nations culture, and build professional skills that shape their careers.
qathet educators gain opportunities to travel to Thailand, teach French and share Canadian programs with CMU student teachers. International experience that helps the district retain great teachers and build long-term cross-cultural relationships.
The initiative is led by a Powell River / qathet-based husband and wife team.
She is a BC-certified teacher with over 18 years of experience in French immersion education, arts programming, and international partnership development.
He is a creative workshop facilitator, ceramics instructor, and arts educator who operates a community arts workshop in Powell River / qathet.
Together they bring decades of experience in education, ceramics, music, and visual arts, with deep personal connections in both Powell River / qathet and Chiang Mai.
For serious inquiries, the team is happy to introduce themselves personally.
Sanook Canuck also reflects the Francophone presence in British Columbia. Through French-language education and cultural events in Chiang Mai, the project explores how Thai educators may experience both English and French learning environments while engaging with Canadian culture. The project maintains connections with French Embassy cultural programming in Chiang Mai.
